General Responsibilities:

The National Director, Field Medical is responsible for the leadership, direction, and management of a team of Regional Medical Directors (RMDs).  The role will report to the Vice President of Medical Affairs. This role will provide guidance and leadership to the overall team but will also have responsibilities to the medical and scientific community within a territory in a player-coach model.  The National Director, Field Medical will have scientific exchange of medical and clinical information about Tourmaline’s disease areas of interest, clinical trial program and product candidate information as appropriate to key opinion leaders, researchers, academic institutions, community group practices, healthcare professionals (including allied healthcare members), advocacy groups, payers and professional organizations.


  • Ensures operational excellence of the RMD team, including corporate aligned objective/tactics, cross-functional medical support, interaction with opinion leaders and facilitating clinical research to meet strategic development needs.
  • Provides independent strategic thought and initiative in the preparation and completion of a variety of tasks, projects, and reports relating to the conduct of field medical activities, deliver on medical affairs strategies and demonstrate field medical effectiveness.
  • Uses autonomy as needed in the preparation and completion of tasks, projects, and reports relating to the conduct of field medical activities, deliver on medical affairs strategies and demonstrate field medical effectiveness.
  • Develops individual talent within the RMD team, including training, career evaluation, coaching, mentoring, performance management and talent review. This may include recruiting, hiring, and onboarding new RMDs.
  • In addition to management of the RMD team, this role will also have field facing responsibilities for key stakeholder interactions within a specified region or territory.
  • Establishes relationships with sales teams and with external contacts and is expected to participate in special projects based on extensive knowledge base, experience, and competency.
  • Anticipates obstacles and difficulties that may arise and resolves them in a collaborative manner.
  • Utilizes scientific resources to deliver impactful presentations in a variety of different settings including advisory board meetings.
  • Works in alignment with corporate and brand strategy to appropriately execute medical tactics.
  • Provides scientific input and field-obtained advice and insights to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Has budgetary responsibility.
  • Develops, or oversees the development of SOPs, policies & procedures, and work instructions for field-based medical team operations.
  • Develops and/or contributes to the development, review, and approval of materials to be used by field based medical teams.


  • Advanced degree (i.e., MD, DO, PharmD, PhD, NP/PA or equivalent) required.
  • Therapeutic expertise in Ophthalmology, Cardiology, Immunology, Endocrinology, or other related fields is a plus.

Experience and Attributes:

  • The applicant should have 5 or more years of experience and a relevant degree and background.
  • Must have a demonstrated track record of being fully independent operating in a field-based territory and should preferably have experience managing field-based teams.
  • Prior drug launch experience as a RMD manager is strongly preferred.
  • Relevant clinical practice experience within a therapeutic area of interest (i.e., Ophthalmology, Cardiology, Immunology, Endocrinology) is a plus.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills
  • Experience hiring, training, and successfully onboarding RMDs.
  • Willingness to work hard in a dynamic environment with changing priorities.
  • Willingness to work in a highly regulated environment with a high level of integrity, compliance, ethics, and discretion. Must perform tasks and manage the team with a compliance mindset.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple tasks from multiple parties and work in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines.
  • Must have the ability to work cross functionally with medical representation.
  • A good team player with solid record of collaboration within and across functional areas.
  • Ability to interface effectively with a variety of technical platforms for the collection/development of field reports, slide content, strategy/review, and dissemination of medical information.
  • Sound computer skills including applications for word processing, producing slide materials, working with spreadsheets, and other pharma platforms such as CRM (i.e. – Veeva or equivalent), material review, insight gathering/processing and KOL interaction is required.
  • The ability to operate a motor vehicle safely and successfully.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • This is a field-based position. The employee is required to set up a home-based office within their defined territory.
  • Travel (approx. 50%), locally, within the US and occasional international travel as required. Periodic travel to the Tourmaline office in New York is required. Regular travel to meetings with key stakeholders (KOLs, HCPs, Advocacy, Payers, etc.) and congress meetings is required.  Physical attendance at other company, project, and team meetings / trainings may be required.

Base Salary Range: $246,000 – $294,000 based on candidate professional experience level.
